Porto Alegre receives MCR2030 Resilience Hub’s certification from UNDRR and ICLEI

On 17 August 2023, Porto Alegre received the MCR2030 Resilience Hub certificate during the Opening Ceremony of the 2nd ICLEI Brazil South Regional Meeting, which took place at the Santander Lighthouse in the historic centre of the capital.

The certification is the result of the capital's commitment to support other local governments in advancing their disaster resilience processes. Clément Da Cruz, Junior Officer of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative at UNDRR Americas and the Caribbean, and Rodrigo Corradi, Executive Secretary of ICLEI South America, presented the certificate to Mayor Sebastião Melo and Cassio Trogildo, Secretary of Local Governance and Policy Coordination and Director of Resilience of Porto Alegre.

The certification is awarded by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Global Coordination Committee of MCR2030. To obtain this recognition, the capital cityhas developed an action plan to mentor disaster resilience activitiesamong the municipalities that make up the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (GRANPAL). The Action Plan was developed with the support of international organisations.

Currently, only five Brazilian cities have been nominated as MCR2030 Resilience Hubs: Porto Alegre, Recife, Campinas, Salvador and Barcarena.
