On 4 December 2024, the first-ever MCR2030 training session for Nicosia was held online, bringing together more than 40 participants from Nicosia and beyond. Organized in collaboration with Nicosia Municipality, CYENS Centre of Excellence, UNDRR Global Education and Training Institute GETI, and UNDRR Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, the session aimed to strengthen urban resilience and disaster risk reduction (DRR) capacities.

During the session, participants were reminded of the importance of DRR and resilience-building when a magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the region. The event underscored the urgency of preparing for natural hazards and building robust systems to safeguard communities. Fortunately, no major damage was reported.

The training provided participants with practical tools, such as MCR2030 resilience scorecards, and strategies for developing local action plans. A highlight of the session was the exchange of experiences and best practices shared by four MCR2030 Resilience Hubs: Amadora, Lviv, Matosinhos, and Potenza. Their inspiring examples not only provided valuable insights but also fostered meaningful connections, opening doors for future collaborations.

The session’s success, coupled with the real-time reminder of risk management, reinforced the critical role of initiatives like MCR2030 in creating inclusive and resilient cities. Nicosia continues to take significant strides in its journey toward urban resilience, setting a strong example for other cities in the region and beyond.
